Equality & Diversity Statement

Equality and Diversity

At Vermont School, we are committed to creating a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child is valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential.

As a public body, we comply with the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty. This means we actively work to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation;
  • Advance equality of opportunity;
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Our Equality Commitment

We recognise that many of our pupils experience barriers linked to social, emotional and mental health needs. We adopt a trauma-informed, child-centred approach and are committed to removing obstacles to learning, wellbeing and participation.

We promote equality across all protected characteristics, including age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

How We Eliminate Discrimination

We actively prevent discrimination and promote fairness by:

  • Maintaining clear safeguarding, behaviour and anti-bullying procedures
  • Recording, monitoring and responding to incidents of prejudice or discrimination
  • Providing regular staff training in SEMH, trauma-informed practice, SEND and equality
  • Using restorative approaches to repair relationships and promote accountability
  • Ensuring policies reflect inclusive practice and high expectations for all pupils

All concerns are taken seriously and followed up appropriately.

Equality Objectives (2024–2028)

Over the next four years we aim to:

  1. Improve emotional regulation and engagement in learning for pupils with SEMH needs through targeted interventions and consistent trauma-informed practice.
  2. Reduce attendance gaps for vulnerable pupils by strengthening family support and personalised attendance plans.
  3. Increase parental engagement for families experiencing disadvantage by offering flexible communication and support opportunities.
