Art

What is Art?

Art is the study of creativity, expression, and design. At Vermont School, it helps children belong by sharing ideas and working together, believe in their imagination and abilities, and achieve by developing skills to create purposeful and expressive artwork. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, and 3D design, pupils explore how art connects to culture, music, and the wider world.

Why do we teach Art?

We teach Art because it allows every child to express themselves, celebrate creativity, and understand the world through a visual lens. It helps pupils belong by exploring diverse artistic traditions, believe in themselves by taking risks and developing resilience, and achieve by producing work they are proud of. Art builds cultural capital, confidence, and problem-solving skills, preparing children for life beyond school and opening doors to culture, design, and creative careers.

How we teach Art.

At Vermont School, Art is taught through engaging themes that inspire imagination and connect learning to real-world contexts. Pupils explore topics such as games, world cultures, and music, developing skills in drawing, design, construction, and printmaking. Lessons are practical, collaborative, and inclusive, giving children opportunities to plan, experiment, evaluate, and refine their work. Enrichment, discussion, and exposure to influential artists deepen their cultural understanding and nurture a lifelong love of creativity. In line with our values, pupils belong by creating and sharing together, believe in their creative ideas, and achieve through resilience, originality, and success in expressing themselves.
