Science

What is Science?

Science is about exploring the world with curiosity and wonder. Children learn by asking questions, testing ideas, and discovering how things work — from plants and animals, to materials, forces, and the wider environment. Through Science, pupils build confidence, wellbeing, and connection with others as they share discoveries, work in teams, and express their ideas. It links learning to everyday life while opening doors to future opportunities.

Why do we teach Science?

We teach Science to inspire curiosity, resilience, and a love of discovery. Science helps children prepare for life beyond school by understanding their health, the environment, and the role of technology in the world around them. At Vermont School, Science connects with our values: pupils Belong by learning together, Believe in themselves as scientists, and Achieve by celebrating their discoveries. Every child is encouraged to express themselves, succeed, and develop the cultural capital that helps them thrive in the wider world.

How we teach Science.

At Vermont School, Science is taught through engaging, hands-on activities that make learning fun and meaningful. Lessons are practical, reflective, and inclusive, giving children opportunities to experiment, explore outdoors, and work together. Pupils develop knowledge and skills such as observation, problem-solving, empathy, and self-regulation, while enrichment trips and stories bring learning to life. Science at Vermont School helps children to Belong in a safe and supportive community, Believe in their strengths, and Achieve by building resilience, confidence, and a sense of pride in their learning.
