Holidays in Term Time
The Department of Education has made amendments to the 2006 regulations regarding attendance and the authorisation of school holidays in term time. These make it clear that Head Teachers may not grant time off during term time unless there are 'exceptional circumstances'.
In light of these changes, it will no longer be possible to authorise leave of absence for holidays during term time unless the 'exceptional circumstances' have been explained. Please be aware that reasons such as "the holiday is cheaper during term time" or "it is more convenient" are no longer acceptable.
At Vermont, we believe that for children to get the best from their learning, it is essential they attend school every day. It is our role, in liaison with our parents, to make sure that this happens. We recognise however, the pressure placed on families when they have a child with special educational needs/a disability and their need for respite.
Families therefore are requested to complete a 'leave of absence request form' for planned term time absences, and provide information as to why they feel is necessary for their child to be taken out of school during term time.
Parents are welcome to discuss any request for a holiday in term time with Mrs Louisa Paston. If, however, Mrs Louisa Paston does not authorise the requested leave of absence and parents continue to remove their child on the requested dates, please be aware that the school is required to notify the Local Authority who will potentially impose a £60 penalty per child per parent. This will increase to £120 if the fine is not paid within 21 days.
