Phonics

What is Phonics?

Phonics is the process of learning to read and then learning how to spell words. Children will develop their pronuncuation of the 44 sounds using pure sounds (saying them correctly) and then apply this to reading words containing those sounds. Children will develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills along side the physical act of reading.

Why do we teach Phonics?

Phonics allows children to read new and unfamiliar texts both in the context of school and the wider world around them. They gain in confidence with the sound knowledge to become fluent and successful readers.

How we teach Phonics

At Vermont School, we follow the Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme by Ruth Miskin. It is the UK's leading phonics programme with excellent rates of progress. It allows the children to reinforce their previous knowledge alongside learning new sounds. The children are also regularly practising their segmenting and blending skills - sounding out words to decode them and then blend the sounds together to read the word as a whole. Whilst learning a new sound, the children will learn how to write / form the letter to develop their handwriting skills too.
